How to Take a Representative and Effective Soil Sample from a Horse Paddock

A paddock soil analysis is only as useful as the sample sent to the laboratory.

Taking soil from one convenient spot beside the gateway will not provide a reliable picture of the wider field. A good sample combines small soil cores collected from across an area with similar soil, management and day to day use.

The process is straightforward, easy and should usually take around 20-40 minutes, depending on the size and layout of the paddock.

What do you need?

Before starting, gather:

  • A soil corer, auger or just a clean trowel
  • A clean plastic bucket
  • The soil-analysis sample bag or container
  • A marker pen
  • A notebook or paddock record
  • Clean gloves, where appropriate

Use clean equipment and remove soil left from previous sampling areas or use. This is particularly important where trace elements are being analysed.


How to take a paddock sample

  1. Decide which paddock or area you are testing.
  2. Separate areas with different soil or management
  3. Walk the representative area in a broad W pattern
  4. Take small cores at regular stopping points
  5. Keep every core at a consistent depth
  6. Avoid gateways, troughs, dung patches and other unusual areas
  7. Mix the soil thoroughly in a clean bucket
  8. Place the required amount in the sample bag
  9. Label it clearly and send it as instructed

AHDB (The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board) recommends walking a W-shaped pattern across the sampling area and collecting soil from at least 25 different points. Ideally, each sampling area should be no larger than 4 hectares (approximately 10 acres).

For smaller paddocks, we still recommend collecting soil from a good spread of locations. Even for a paddock of around 1 acre (approximately 0.4 hectares), we advise taking 15–20 individual samples and combining them thoroughly. This helps create a representative sample of the paddock rather than relying on soil from just one or two areas.

Once the soil has been combined and mixed, please send at least:

Sample to a depth where the majority of the grass roots are growing, usually not much deeper than 100 - 150mm.

For short-term leys or grassland that is about to be ploughed and reseeded AHDB normally recommend sampling more deeply, at approximately 150mm. If you do not have a soil corer or auger a spade can be used.

If you have any areas of a field that are particularly bad, we do recommend that they are done as a separate sample to help you overcome the key issues that are affecting the area.

Step 1: Decide which area you are testing

Treat each paddock as a separate sampling area where it has a different:

  • soil type
  • drainage pattern
  • grazing pressure
  • fertiliser or lime history
  • management use
  • level of wear

A heavily grazed turnout paddock and a rested hay field may require different treatments and should not normally be mixed into one sample.

Where a single field contains two clearly different soil types or management areas, sample them separately.

Step 2: Identify areas that should be excluded

The main sample should represent the normal paddock, not its most unusual spots.

Avoid collecting soil directly from:

  • gateways
  • water troughs
  • feeding areas
  • dung or urine patches
  • manure heaps
  • fence and hedge lines
  • bonfire sites
  • wet hollows
  • heavily poached ground
  • beneath trees
  • recently fertilised or limed patches

These locations may return unusually high, low or otherwise misleading readings.

A muddy gateway, for example, is often affected by compaction, drainage and hoof traffic. Its condition does not necessarily mean that the whole paddock has the same soil problem.

Step 3: Sample problem areas separately

An unusual area may still be worth testing, but it should be submitted as its own clearly labelled sample.

Separate testing may be useful for:

  • a wet section where grass consistently fails
  • a dry or sandy bank
  • an area with a different soil type
  • a section that received a different treatment
  • a poor-performing hay area
  • a part of the field with substantially different grass growth

This allows the main sample to represent the wider paddock while providing additional information about the problem area.

Step 4: Allow time after recent treatments

Recent applications can affect the result.

At Amenity Choice we advise avoiding routine nutrient sampling:

  • within six months of applying lime
  • within 12 weeks of applying fertiliser, other than nitrogen
  • within 12 weeks of applying organic manure
  • when the soil is very dry

Follow the instructions supplied with your analysis. Speak to the Amenity Choice technical team where application dates or waiting periods are uncertain.

Step 5: Walk a broad W pattern

Walk across the paddock in a broad W shape.

Take one small core at each regular stopping point. Spread the points across the full representative area rather than concentrating on places that are easiest to reach.

Aim to collect at least 25 small cores. This reduces the influence of local variations and creates a more reliable average of the sampled area.

Do not deliberately select only:

  • the greenest grass
  • the thinnest grass
  • the areas with most weeds
  • the areas nearest the gate

The objective is to represent the normal field.


Step 6: Take every core to the same depth

Consistent sampling depth is important because nutrient levels can vary through the soil profile.

For established long-term grassland, collect each core to not much deeper than 100 – 150mm, unless the supplied guidance states otherwise.

For short-term leys or ground that is about to be ploughed and completely reseeded, a deeper sample may be needed. Ask for advice where the intended management is unclear.

Remove obvious surface vegetation and loose organic debris before adding the core to the bucket.

Step 7: Mix the soil thoroughly

Place all the cores from one representative area into a clean bucket.

Break up larger pieces and mix the soil thoroughly. Remove:

  • stones
  • living leaves
  • grass stems
  • roots where practical
  • other obvious debris

Mixing reduces the influence of any single core and produces a more representative sample.

Do not send one large lump of soil taken from one location.

Step 8: Fill the supplied sample container

Transfer the amount required by the soil-analysis instructions into the supplied bag or container.

Make sure it is securely closed and packaged as directed. Do not place wet soil in unsuitable packaging that may split or leak.

Step 9: Label the sample clearly

Clearly label the transparent bags with text that identifies:

  • paddock or field name
  • sampling date
  • approximate field size

Copy the same text on the transparent bags into the:

  • FIELD REFERENCE box
  • on the accompanying white ANALYTICAL ORDER FORM sheet

It is also worth taking note if you know for your reference of:

  • recent fertiliser, lime or manure
  • recent overseeding or weed control
  • whether the field is used for hay
  • visible concerns such as weeds, bare ground or poor recovery

Good records help the technical team interpret the results and allow you to compare future tests with the same paddock and how improvements have been made.

Step 10: Send the sample promptly

Carefully follow the postage and packaging instructions supplied with the service.

Keep a copy of your notes. Photographs of the paddock and individual problem areas can also be helpful when discussing the results.


Common soil-sampling mistakes

Incorrectly labelling sample bags or forms

Make sure all sample bags and accompanying forms are labelled clearly and correctly before sending them to the laboratory.

Incorrect or incomplete labelling can prevent the laboratory from matching your sample to the correct test or processing it properly, which may delay or prevent us from receiving your results for interpretation.

Taking one sample beside the gate

A gateway is affected by traffic, mud and compaction and rarely represents the wider paddock.

Mixing several paddocks together

Different fields may have different soils, management histories and nutrient requirements.

Collecting only from poor areas

This may exaggerate a local problem and lead to an inappropriate whole-field recommendation.

Sampling at inconsistent depths

Different depths may contain different nutrient concentrations, reducing the reliability of the combined result.

Using dirty equipment

Residues from soil, fertiliser or other materials can contaminate the sample.

Testing immediately after treatment

Recently applied fertiliser, lime or manure may affect the reading.

Sampling extremely dry or waterlogged soil

Very poor conditions can make it difficult to collect consistent, representative cores.

Paddock soil-sampling checklist

Before sending your sample, check that:

  • the sampled area has broadly similar soil and management
  • unusual areas were excluded or sampled separately
  • multiple cores were taken across a W pattern
  • all cores were collected to a consistent depth
  • clean equipment and a clean bucket were used
  • the cores were mixed thoroughly
  • the sample is clearly labelled
  • recent paddock treatments have been recorded
  • the correct packaging and posting instructions have been followed

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a garden trowel?

Yes, provided it is clean and you can use it to collect soil at a consistent depth. A soil corer or auger may be quicker and more consistent when testing several paddocks.

Can one sample cover two adjoining paddocks?

Only where both paddocks have genuinely similar soil, use, drainage and treatment history. Separate samples usually provide more useful information where the fields are managed differently.

Should I include soil from the poached gateway?

Not in the main representative sample. The gateway can be assessed or sampled separately if you want to investigate it.

How much soil do I need?

Use the quantity stated in the instructions supplied with your analysis. The laboratory needs enough well-mixed soil to complete all the selected tests.

What should I do after sending the sample?

Use the waiting period to continue to keep an eye of and where necessary record the condition of the paddock, including grass density, weeds, drainage, compaction and grazing pressure. These observations will help when interpreting the laboratory report.
