Siting Guidance

Barn owls prefer open countryside over woodland and require safe, accessible flight paths. For best results:

• Mount the box 2.5m to 5m high on a tree, barn, or building, ideally facing east, southeast, or northeast
• Avoid locations within ½ mile of major roads – barn owls often hunt at low levels and are vulnerable to vehicle strikes
• Ensure a clear flight path to the box, without obstructions
• Prioritise locations near vole-rich grasslands or lightly managed farmland, as these offer ideal hunting grounds
