Tree Hugger™ Biodegradable Shelters - Sustainable Tree Protection
For orders over 500, please contact us on 01952 641949 or sales@amenity.co.uk

Tree Hugger™ guards are a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to plastic tree shelters or guards. Manufactured in the UK from organic cotton encapsulated in renewable pine tree rosin, the Tree Hugger™ Biodegradable Shelters have a minimum 5-year lifespan giving the tree valuable protection during its critical establishment period.
Because these tree shelters are made entirely from natural, organic materials they will completely biodegrade at the end of their useful lifespan meaning that the removal of single use plastic shelters is no longer required, saving time and money.
The woven material structure provides strong protection against damage from grazing animals but is gentle on the plant offering little friction which could cause damage to the newly planted whip.

Unlike plastic tree guards and shelters, Tree Hugger™ Biodegradable Tree Guards are made from 100% natural materials which completely biodegrade over a period time removing the requirement for costly tree guard removal operations and reducing the amount of plastic waste that is left in the environment. The lifespan of this tree protector is dependent on the quality of installation and on local environment conditions. Extensive testing tailored to meet real life requirements for the product has shown that a minimum lifespan of 5 years can be expected.

FAQs
Tree Hugger™ shelters are crafted from a blend of organic loomstate cotton and pine rosin. The cotton is sourced in accordance with Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS), while the pine rosin comes from sustainably managed forests certified by the Swedish FSC and ISCC. This unique combination of natural, plant-based materials ensures the shelters are fully biodegradable and free from plastics.
These shelters offer several benefits for sapling growth. The woven natural fiber provides robust support and protects against damage from grazing animals and herbicide sprays. The material's structure allows for excellent light transmission, diffusing light beneficial for photosynthesis while reducing harmful wavelengths. Apertures in the fabric promote air movement, creating a protective microclimate that encourages healthy growth and helps prevent frost and heat damage. The cotton fibers are also gentle on the plant, minimizing friction and potential damage.
Tree Hugger™ Biodegradable Shelters have a minimum lifespan of 5 years. Under natural environmental conditions, the Tree Hugger will be completely biodegradable within a 10-year period.
Tree Hugger™ guards are environmentally friendly and sustainable. They are designed and manufactured to be harmless to the environment. They are made entirely from natural, organic materials and are described as 100% biodegradable and 100% sustainable.
Tree Huggers are packaged in a large bag with a cable tie securing the contents together at the top. They are packaged in a nested group of 5, consisting of various diameters concentrically placed within each other. The bagged Tree Huggers are supplied with fixed cardboard ends for protection. Cable ties are pre-attached.
Installation instructions suggest finding what works best depending on the environment, either planting the whip first or the tree stake. The Tree Hugger requires suitable support through the use of a wooden stake or similar. The stake should generally be about 20% longer than the shelter and driven into the ground about 1/3 of its height for firm support. The stake should be positioned on the windward side of the sapling if there are strong prevailing winds. The top of the stake should be below the top rim of the Tree Hugger and above the top cable tie.
Installation steps:
- Select a shelter from the nesting.
- Position the shelter over the tree, taking care not to damage branches. Loop the lower cable tie over the top of the stake.
- Continue sliding the shelter down, looping the top cable tie over the stake.
- Lower the shelter until it has penetrated the ground slightly (approx. 2mm), but do not force it.
- Tighten the cable ties sufficiently to secure the Tree Hugger against the stake. Gently press down and twist the cable ties as you go to keep them tidy.
- Once both cable ties are secured, wrap the cable ties over themselves to prevent wildlife catching the loose tie material.
If stored for a protracted period, Tree Huggers must be kept in a dry, cool location where strong levels of ultraviolet light are unable to penetrate the enclosure. When stored, the bagged Tree Huggers must be kept in an upright position on the cardboard ends and must not be laid flat on their side. Reasonable care should be taken when handling the product to prevent crushing or excessive forces on the circumference of the shelter whilst transporting.
